Adult Students Thrive with the Help of LVMC

Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (LVMC), a not-for-profit in Morristown, New Jersey, is providing literary resources and tutoring to adults in over 40 communities, allowing them to create a better future for themselves and their families.

LVMC is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide. They are an organization of trained volunteers dedicated to providing one-to-one small group tutoring throughout Morris County. The free tutoring is accessible to students over 18 who live or work in Morris County and seek to strengthen their skills in several areas including:

  • English as a Second Language
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • High School Equivalency Preparation (GED)
  • Basic Remedial Math
  • Citizenship Preparation

Over the last 30 years, LVMC has helped thousands of people improve their ability to work; create financially stable lives for their families; and live productive, independent lives.

When W, a student born in Ecuador, came to the program he had a dream of going to college but needed assistance with his writing and math skills. He wanted to make sure he had the necessary proficiencies required to pass the entrance exam for the local community college.

With the help of a trained LVMC tutor and the support of The Provident Bank Foundation, W was not only able to attend the local community college but went on to obtain his Associates Degree eventually transferring to a four-year university.

After seeing what an impact LVMC made on his education, W returned to further improve his writing skills. He was matched with a published author who provided top-tier writing assistance and supported him during the college admissions process. W was accepted to several prestigious schools and is now a Junior at Columbia University where he is studying Information Technology.

W is just one of the thousands of individuals that LVMC has helped to ensure their opportunities in life were not limited because of their inability to read, write or speak English fluently.

For more than three decades LVMC has not just opened books, but they have opened doors for so many. Their mission is to provide free instruction to Morris County adults in literacy, English fluency, and American culture so that members of the community are given every opportunity to improve their quality of life and that of their families. Funding from The Provident Bank Foundation has been instrumental in helping to bring that mission to life by ensuring that the program and all materials remain accessible to those in the community who need it most.
